As a town built in the early 1700s, Beaufort is the third oldest in the state of North Carolina. It stands out because of its unique combination of the old and new. The 2.7-mile town may sound small but it boasts a lively downtown scene, especially along Front Street, and a number of must-see attractions. Fort Macon State Park is 389 acres of gorgeous beaches combined with a well-preserved fort that was originally built to protect against pirate attacks. Learn more about encounters with pirates such as Blackbeard and more than three centuries of local history at the NC Maritime Museum. Rent a kayak to tour the island from the water. Take a quick water taxi or maritime shuttle to Shackleford Bank to explore a natural park of the seashore and see the famous feral ponies that are descendants of Spanish mustangs. Cape Lookout Lighthouse is also accessible via ferry from Beaufort. By Cousins Bed and Breakfast.

Beaufort by the Sea is a beautiful, quaint historic town on the coast in the southern outer banks. It hosts wonderful restaurants, shops, a maritime museum, an old burial ground and is home to Black Beard the pirate-and more! By Ann Street Inn.
