Description
Circa 1910. In a pueblo revival style, Casa del Gavilan (house of the hawk), was built by J. J. Nairn, an eastern industrialist. Overlooking the Santa Fe Trail, it is in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The "Tooth of Time" peak rises in the distance, while views of the valley and grasslands are to the east. The home once served as a center for hospitality in the region, and hosted author Will James and many other artists and writers. A plethora of porches and gardens provide pleasant places from which to enjoy the views. Museum quality antiques and paintings add to the authentic Southwest experience provided by the home's 18-inch-thick walls and 12-foot ceilings. Guests enjoy hearty breakfasts from the patio or dining room. The Kit Carson home is nearby.
