The town is relatively small when compared to coastal population centers in the state's coastal areas. The town took its name from the fact that this was once two separate towns, namely Dover and Foxcroft. Dover-Foxcroft was once a logging and wood milling town. This owes to the fact that the Piscataquis River is nearby and it is here that the saw mills were once built and operated. Now some of these mills are still standing but are no longer operational. Guests billeted at Dover-Foxcroft bed and breakfast inns usually make it a point to visit the mills and to take pictures. The Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society building is also worth a visit since it provides a better understanding of the town's history. The Municipal Skating Rink is frequented by both visiting individuals and locals.
