A Slice of Lancaster Heaven

The Smithton Inn was amazing. Dave and Rebecca are terrific hosts. When we checked in Dave greeted us and gave us a wonderful tour of the Inn. The room, the Red Room, was very comfortable. The tub is huge and since my husband and I are both tall we did not have any problems climbing in and out. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets that they have on the beds are super soft! They have a wonderful DVD library which we took advantage of in the evenings after a very busy day of sight seeing. Breakfast the first day was cooked by Dave and breakfast the second day was cooked by Rebecca, both days the food was very good and it was wonderful to talk to Dave and Rebecca. Rebecca even took our picture and emailed us a copy of it as a memento from our trip. Dave gave us wonderful recommendations for dinner when we arrived and we ended up going to both of his suggestions each evening. Lucky their dog is so sweet, since we have two dogs and had not seen them in days it was so nice to pet her and visit with her too. Thank you to Rebecca, Dave, Judy and Lucky for the wonderful memories and the relaxing visit.

Warm reception

After a 10 hour drive we arrived at the Historic Smithton Inn with the usual aches and pains. These were immediately soothed by the warm reception from Rebecca and Lucky the Dog accompanied by coffee and cookies. We soon graduated to a nice glass of wine in front of the fireplace. Rebecca and David directed us to a closeby restaurant for a liesurely evening meal followed by pleasant conversation with our hosts in front of the fire place at the Inn and rubbing Lucky's tummy. After a great sleep snuggled into the comfortable bed in the quiet upstairs backroom we were welcomed with great coffee and waffles smothered in banana-rum sauce and strawberries. We volunteer at the Mennonite 10,000 Villages store in Ottawa and we were pleased to discover the original store is in Ephrata - we were welcomed there as northern cousins committed to the cause - well worth a visit while you are in town.

Exceeded Expectations

Living in Manhattan, I had come to a point where I needed a refuge from stress, noise, chaos while still being able to maintain some standard of quality and comfort. Having been to Lancaster Co./Amish area once before, I knew that fresh air would be forthcoming, but what about a comfortable bed and delicious breakfast? Let me be succinct in stating why I've decided to take the time to write this review of Smithton Inn in Ephrata Pa: 1. THE INNKEEPER (Rebecca), when I spoke to her on the phone, immediately put me at ease by her enthusiasm which far exceeded any feeling of officiousness. We all know this is a business for profit, but we cling to the hope that we can still feel relaxed and WELCOME upon arrival, and this I felt. 2. THE INN. It is GORGEOUS. All the antiques are AUTHENTIC, it's not some hokey recreation. The beds are supremely comfortable (tempur pedic just like I have at home), the towels thick, the water pressure high, wide screen TVs, WORKING fireplaces. Do I REALLY need to continue? I had a fire burning all evening, as well as an IN ROOM massage. All this while keeping in tact the feeling of being liberated from the city and immersed into a relaxing Pa town with Amish roots. 3. BREAKFAST. Rebecca loves cooking, and as I saw my reservation go from one day to two to three, I will say that the thought of getting up from my comfortable bed was made easier by knowing that chicken hash with poached eggs, raspberry pancakes, asparagus and cheese quiche were waiting for me. She actually SEASONS her food as I would, I remember thinking that were I to criticize it would be that some guests might find this not to their taste, especially if they prefer eggos for breakfast but for me, someone who uses herbs and spices, it was a pleasure. SAGE in my hash! Of COURSE! 4. PRICE. Prices are bargains, that's all there is to say. I'm not rich nor poor, but it's within my price range and I'll be back as soon as I need another does of R and R, and that will be SOON.

Valentine's Day Get-a-Way

My husband and I were on vacation in PA and ended up at The Smithton on Valentine's Day. WOW! The proprietors made us chocolate cookies/candies, asked what they could do to make our stay better, etc. They are 100% customer-oriented! The Inn is amazing - built pre-Civil War. Each room is period restored/the kitchen floor (ooollllddd bricks) looks authentic/the ambience is GREAT! We look forward to a return visit to PA strictly to go to The Smithton! OUTSTANDING B&B!

Best Place!

My husband and I stayed here for Valentines and loved every minute of our stay. The owners are so personable. The food is out of this world; something new and delicious made fresh everyday. The rooms are so quaint and comfy. It was all the little attention to detail that made this place so great. We left on our last day with fresh baked goodies in hand and are already planning to go back again.

A must see and stay awhile!!!

This is a beautiful, historical home and we loved learning all about it's history from the owners, who are so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are large, cozy, and comfortable, with private baths and working, wood fireplace (what a huge plus).... Rebecca made a delicious breakfast worthy of 5 stars!!!! We look forward to visiting again soon!

Homey Spacious Rooms

I stayed at the Smithton Inn last week. The rooms are accented with Amish quilts and handicrafts. I stayed in the purple room which was very roomy and cozy. The big bed had a pretty quilt. The seating area has its own fireplace. There was a work area for my computer with wifi. The bathroom was enormous with a two-person jetted tub. The inn was built in the 1700s so it is loaded with history. The new owners are doing a stellar job restoring its luster. The breakfasts are wonderful. I had baked french toast and dark roast coffee--delicious. They also had homemade muesli and yogurt. It is close to the Ephrata Cloisters which is a beautiful historic site.

One of the most

After visiting over 50 inns in four countries, Smithton has to be one of the most romantic, picturesque inns in America. I have never seen its equal!

Absolutely Wonderful

My wife and I stayed in December 2010 while we were in Ephrata for my sons' wedding. We couldn't have selected a better place! Rebecca , Dave, Judy, and of course, Lucky made us feel more than welcome. The suite was perfect, the breakfasts just fantastic, and the whole atmosphere was fantastic. We have decided that this is the ONLY place to stay!

memorable experience

Many years ago my wife and I discovered the benefits of staying at a Bed & Breakfast. Recently we had the pleasure of a two night stay at the Historic Smithton Inn. The experience was one of the best we have had with B&Bs. Rebecca and Dave could not have been better hosts! The room was wonderful and the breakfasts were great. We had never had a more extensive DVD library of free DVDs to choose from. Lucky, the small family dog kept us company while we relaxed in the spacious parlor. The free self service coffee maker was always available to us along with the homemade cookies on the entrance hall counter top.

We Will be Back!

The food, room, and owners were simply amazing. The breakfasts were scrumptious and left us full until dinner. The room (Crimson Suite) was AMAZING. All in all - we cannot wait to get back to the area so we can stay at the Historic Smithon Inn!

one of the BEST!!

We LOVED the Smithton Inn!! we stayed in 2 different rooms, 2 nights (sage & chocolate) and both were lovely (though we noticed the chocolate room was slightly affected by the road noise outside; the sage is on the back of the house). Or favorite feature was the WOOD BURNING fireplaces in each room, yet other modern conveniences, too, such as tv's and DVD players in each room with a movie library downstairs. The breakfasts were delicious and we loved the accessibility of coffee, tea or hot chocolate being available at any time. Dave, his wife and housekeeper were excellent hosts! We were disappointed with Lilly's (a dinner recommendation), especially considering the menu prices, but very much enjoyed the Black Horse Tavern. We also really enjoyed visiting the historic Ephrata Cloister down the road, which had ties to the original Smithton owners. REALLY great experience overall. We'd definitely go back!!

Could Not Have Been Happier!

My fiance and I stayed there for 3 days and loved every minute of it. From the super-comfortable beds (and I am PICKY about beds!) to the amazing meals (Rebecca is a STAR in this kitchen - she even went out of her way to accommodate my special meal requirements), we couldn't have asked for more. we loved it SO much, in fact, that we are now working with Rebecca to rent the whole Inn and host our wedding there!

InnSide Tip - If you're a light sleeper...
... you might want to ask for a room away from the road. The Inn is on a busy intersection - I was able to use a fan to combat the noise. We'll be returning, so it wasn't THAT big of an issue.
