Historical review
Having stayed at the Inn of the Golden Ox in the 1970s, I found the lodging and hospitality under the Evans management to be first class. The Inn was quite a charming place, with Innkeeper Chuck Evans (a polymath and polyglot) attending to many of New England's political families, with his stories, birds, and other fascinating interests. Regular visitors included the U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill and Kennedy family members. The company and hospitality was exceptional, and the German food (especially the unprecedented cheesecake) unquestionably remarkable. So appreciative for the memories of such an exceptional place.

Reflections: Gasthaus zum Goldenen Ochsen
The Inn has closed so I write from the perspective of the first waiter hired at the Inn of the Golden Ox, May 1967. Three waiters served two seatings nightly throughout the summer season in addition to duty as chamber-persons maintaining 7 bedrooms and baths. The Inn was immediately popular for its authentic German and Austrian cuisine and for its friendly and warm hospitality. The dining rooms were full, mostly patronized by local residents and visitors to the Cape spreading their experience by word of mouth. I thoroughly enjoyed my three summers working at the Inn between 1967 and 1970 while I pursued my college degree in NJ.
The menu included seven preparations of schitzel, steak, chicken, gemischte salat, spaetzle and kartoffel kloesse; no fish. The Gasthaus was unable to get a liquor license until 1969 but served a good selection of wines and beers.
John and Marie Schwalbe were outgoing and hospitable, keeping in touch with customers. The rooms were small, impecably clean, most shared a bathroom and were overall contributors to the Inn's ambience of warm and excellence.

Gasthaus zum Goldenen Oxen
My first summer job, age 18, 1967, was waiting on tables at the grand opening of the Inn of the Golden Ox in Brewster, Mass. Along with two other waiters and two bus/kitchen boys I served snitzels, gemishte salat, sauerbraten, spaetzl and other specialties 7 nights a week, summers only, for two additional seasons. Our dining room stayed filled through the summer seasons and most customers were returns. I
