Known as the “Queen of the Sierras,” the town came of age in 1848, at the start of the California Gold Rush, when Daniel and John Murphys settled here. Murphys has retained the charm of yesteryear as it has grown into a vibrant, modern community of around 2,000 residents, with all the amenities expected by today’s visitors. Many original Gold Rush era buildings are still in use today, and are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. By CourtWood Inn.
To see Murphys is to witness how California was in the days of the Wild West. A small town that is part of Calaveras County, Murphys has been able to retain most of its ruggedness and historic structures that were built during the gold rush era. Some Murphys bed and breakfast inns have managed to retain this touch. In fact, the popular attractions include Murphys Pokey, which was a jailhouse during the wild yester years. The Famous Residents Wall features illustrated portraits of the town's more prominent personalities in the past. Southwest of the town is the Old Mining Camp of Brownsville, which is no longer operational but has been turned into a museum. Just a mile away from Murphys, are the Mercer Caverns, which is a scenic geological formation. Wine-lovers will have a grand time as they take a tour around Ironstone Vineyards, which is almost three miles from Murphys. By Victoria Inn.
