Description

Circa 1924. Not everything wonderful in Hawaii is located along its impressive shoreline. A case in point is this restored plantation-style home located in Wailuku's historic district and away from the crowded tourist spots. Wailuku is where the people of Maui live and offers shopping, dining and cultural events. The home maintains many original features, including floors made of eucalyptus and a unique elliptical shower. The innkeepers, both of whom are born-and-raised islanders, have been in the hotel and restaurant businesses for more than 30 years, and their expertise is evident. The décor is imaginative and romantic with an eclectic mix of styles that all seem to fit together perfectly. The Hawaiian influence is predominant; each guest room is named after a flower. The Ilima Room is done in a creamy shade of yellow. The bed is topped with a quilt featuring its namesake flower, and the room also includes a spacious whirlpool tub. Several guest rooms afford mountain views. The half-acre grounds are decorated with palms, and guests can enjoy the setting on the inn's wicker-filled porch. The innkeepers serve breakfast on the enclosed porch with a view of Mt. Haleakala, and the menu might include the following: a fresh papaya filled with mango and garnished with strawberries, a Portuguese version of the beignet, and a spinach, tofu and mushroom tart. The inn's central location offers close access to most Maui attractions, including Kahului Airport. The innkeepers offer many amenities for business travelers, including modem jacks, phones with voice mail and fax service.
