The second largest CDP in the state of Hawaii and the largest settlement on the island of Hawaii is a place called Hilo. Hilo is the county seat of Hawaii County and this amazing town overlooks Hilo Bay and is sandwiched between two shield volcanoes, Mauna Kea which is dormant and is the location for some of the best ground-based astronomical observatories in the country, and the other one is Mauna Loa which is still considered an active volcano. The University of Hawaii is also located in Hilo, and this is the location for the Merrie Monarch Festival which is a week-long celebration of the ancient and the modern version of the hula which is regularly celebrated after Easter. Hilo is the location of the world famous Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation which is one of the biggest producers of macadamia nuts. While in town, try staying at any Hilo bed and breakfast inn. By Maureen's Bed & Breakfast.

Historic Downtown Hilo adjacent to the Farmer's Market District and on the corners of Punahoa Street and Ponahawai Street. By Pakalana Inn.

The Hilo region is blessed with dramatic waterfalls, fertile rainforests and blooming gardens; the geographic flipside of the volcanic Kohala Coast.
