Apalachicola, on the North Gulf Coast, is all about oysters and many locals work in the industry; harvesting, processing, and transporting the voluptuous bivalves. There are many fine seafood restaurants to choose from. The little town incorporated in 1827 has quite a bit of interesting history. It was once the third busiest port in the Gulf of Mexico. Botanist Alvan Wentworth Chapman settled in Apalachicola in 1847. Dr. John Gorrie discovered the cold-air process of refrigeration and patented an ice machine in 1850, while trying to help fever patients, which led to advances in modern refrigeration and air-conditioning. The city erected a monument to him, and a replica of his invention is on display in the John Gorrie Museum. The small downtown area is an easy and pleasant walk. It is filled with eclectic shops, eateries, and historic sites, as well as picturesque vistas of the working riverfront. Anyone who wants to see the 'other' Florida should visit Apalachicola. By Coombs House Inn.

The city of Apalachicola is about 80 miles southwest of Tallahassee. Apalachicola actually means people on the other side of the river. This small town situated on the breathtaking scenic U.S. route 98 is famous for its warm and friendly atmosphere. You can get a taste of this hospitality if you stay at any of the Apalachicola bed and breakfast inns. While in town, visit the Sandy Barrier Islands and go hiking in Apalachicola National Forest which covers more than half a million acres. There is also a canoe trail that begins 20 miles west of Tallahassee. Take a side trip to Saint George Islands State Park which has nine miles of virgin and undeveloped sand dunes and beaches. There are also observation platforms, hiking trails and opportunities to go canoeing and fishing. By Coombs House Inn.
