Description
Circa 1865. Once known as Fort McGarry, this historic working ranch once housed the troops who were assigned to protect pioneers traveling the Applegate-Lassen Trail from the Paiute Indians of the area. The Estill family now runs cattle on the land. Green meadows and willow trees frame the ranch house and the bunkhouse. Stone stables erected by the U.S. Army are still in use, as well as the original Officers' Quarters. There are two natural hot springs for swimming. Wildlife is abundant in the area, including wild mustangs, mule deer and antelope. Guests may opt to four wheel, bike, hunt, fish or hike. Some like to mine for opals at the adjacent opal mine, while others organize a camping experience at one of the two sheep camps in the aspen and mahogany forests of the foothills. For the complete experience, join the crew in the cookhouse early for breakfast or later for lunch. A ranch supper is offered in the evening where, after a day or two, you may find yourself spinning a yarn of your own about the Old West.
