Amazing Stay!

The Stonewall Jackson Inn was beautiful. The rooms were lovely. The staff was great, and Wayne's breakfasts were superb! We will definitely be back.

A B&B Gem!

The inn is a lovely Bed and Breakfast located a short walk from historic downtown Harrisonburg. Wayne, the Innkeeper was warm and welcoming, prepared gourmet breakfasts and tended to every need. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, slept peacefully in the comfy beds, and delighted eating breakfast on the patio with the morning glories close by. Can't wait to return.

Home away from home

I brought my mom to the Stonewall Jackson Inn, the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, for her first experience of a bed and breakfast. She absolutely loved it-the quaintness and charm reflecting the décor of the civil war period; the warmth and personal attention of Wayne, the inn keeper; the delicious full breakfast on the patio amongst the morning glories and humming birds; and the beautiful gardens and outdoor seating areas. Our room had everything we needed including very comfortable beds for a great night’s sleep. It was a delight to have a home away from home while visiting my daughter who attends JMU. I’ll look forward to returning with my husband when we visit our daughter again.

Accidental Tourist

Great B&B. Now this is my kind of B&B. Wonderful historic appeal but with many modern day conveniences including wireless internet, cable TV. Those conveniences do not distract from the early American charm as they are nicely tucked away. Meticulously decorated by the owner. They advertise a great breakfast and they deliver. A can't miss B&B.

Delightful Inn

This is a delightful inn, quaint, beautifully decorated in a magnificent house well worth your trip to visit and see. The furnishings will remain in your memory, as well as the hospitality of the Innkeeper, Wayne, whose culinary expertise will satisfy your palate for a "breakfast to remember."

A Birthday to remember

Upon our arrival, after a long drive, we were greeted in the parking lot by our host, Wayne, who assisted us with our luggage. After a brief review of services offered by the Inn, as well as a general overview of the town and local attractions, including restaurants, we were introduced to our room. Everything was perfect! The attention we received during our stay, and the delicious breakfast both mornings has sold us on becoming repeat guests. A big thank you goes to Wayne and his staff for a most excellent experience. We highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn, in Harrisonburg, VA. S&R

Girlfriend Getaway

My best friend and I took advantage of the mid-week girlfriend getaway special. The wine was an excellent choice by Dr. Engel. He arranged for an in room massage for the both of us at our convenience. It was excellent! The Bell Boyd room was wonderful and very clean. Dr. Engel is also a talented cook and the breakfast service was superb! I would highly recommend this B&B. We plan on returning since we enjoy going to the Green Valley Book Fair and the local stores.

Stonewall Jackson Gets Straight As

My husband and I, two teachers beginning our summer vacation, stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B in June. If you are planning to go to the Harrisonburg area, we highly recommend a stay here. Wayne, our host, was wonderful: attentive, friendly, and an excellent chef. His recommendations for restaurants and local activities were just right. Our charming room was very clean - perhaps the cleanest room in a B&B I've ever seen - and comfortable. After our two night stay, we felt renewed and relaxed. We will certainly be returning.

Stonewall Jackson Inn - a place you

We needed a place to get away from it all and relax, and this was the PERFECT place! The Stonewall Jackson Inn is so peaceful, lovely, and everything you would want in an Inn. The decor is warm and inviting and the host is gracious and friendly. He is also a fabulous cook!! Can you imagine French Toast made with croissants? Fresh fruit, eggs, your choice of honey ham or country ham...anything you could want. The service was excellent as well, and the Inn was spotless! Even with a full house you couldn't hear anyone else. Each room is very private and has it's own bath. It was an incredible experience. If you need a quiet getaway, please visit The Stonewall Jackson Inn - you won't be disappointed!!

outstanding

Going into the Stonewall Jackson Inn I was both excited and nervous, having never stayed at a bed and breakfast I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m happy to say that Wayne and his staff blew me away and have now set high standards for any future bed and breakfasts. All of the staff was friendly, attentive, and polite. Our room was cute and cozy equipped with our own bathroom, mini fridge, and television. The house was also very charming; I loved all the outdoor seating options. Breakfast was AMAZING each morning. It’s convenience to all the downtown Harrisonburg restaurants also made for great lunches and dinners. I honestly do not have enough words to express my satisfaction with the Stonewall Jackson Inn.

Great value and comfort

I just returned from a bicycle tour of Virginia with 12 other Canadians. We stayed at 4 different heritage inns, all of which were impressive but, the Stonewall Jackson Inn was in a league of its own. Wayne and his staff give new meaning to the concepts of hospitality, comfort and courtesy. The rooms, grounds and common areas personified southern comfort and the breakfasts were "over the top". My wife and I intend to return to discover more of the living history that surrounds the area, much of which is so well explained by Wayne himself. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is just off Interstate 81 and offers great value and security in a peaceful neighbourhood. Go Canadians Go!!!

Deserves it's Top Rating Award

Truly lives up to it's recent award as "Best B&B in the Mid-Atlantic". I've been to many B&B's, but this one is exceptional in value, comfort and hospitality. I especially liked the historical ambiance and simplicity of hardwood floors, fireplaces, and furnishings. Yet, it was as comfortable as any. I especially liked the fact that one could control the temperature in your room without messing with any other room. Also the rooms are nearly sound proof which really makes for a "A Night's Delight" in respect to the street noise and the adjoining room. But the "Breakfast to Remember" was just that and Wayne, who is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University, is an easy and friendly well traveled and w informed Innkeeper/Concierge. The off-street free parking in the Downtown Historical District was a treat. A nice walk to a delicious dinner at Clementine at sunset was memorable. The "Stonewall Jackson Experience" is truly a very comfortable 5 Star B&B. It is at the top of my list for my next stay in the Shenandoah Valley.

Stonewall Jackson Inn

Stonewall Jackson Inn, Harrisonburg VA 18-20 March 2010 It was a pleasure to stay here, close to everything. The I 81 Interstate, downtown, Skyline Drive, the Arboretum, all were close-by and easily accessible. Wayne, the Innkeeper, was very helpful and suggested many places to visit, and the breakfasts were absolutely “four star”, (especially the Eggs Benedict). We very highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and plan to return ourselves!

We had a most enjoyable visit at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. The Inn is conviniently located within walking distance of places we visited in Harrisonburg. Our room was excellent, the service superb, and the breakfast was indeed one to remember! We are looking forward to another visit soon.

warm and welcoming inn

My boyfriend and I are dating long distance and we meet up half way. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a great halfway destination. When setting up the reservation, i received very warm wishes. They were very kind and willing to work with our different time arrivals. Upon my arrival, they were very friendly; brought me in next to the fire place and explained the history of the place. i felt very comfortable throughtout my visit. The rooms are exceptionally nice. The breakfast is delicious!!! My boyfriend and i plan to stay there again in the near future. We enjoyed the visit very much. I would highly recommend this B&B!

Fine Inn with Fine Rooms

We found the Stonewall Jackson Inn by searching Google for B&Bs in Harrisonburg. We settled on the SJI because of location, apparent ambiance presented by its interesting website, and an interest in meeting Wayne, the innkeeper. We are satisfied with our choice on all counts. Well-written directions brought us to the door, first try. Check-in went very smoothly, and we settled into our room within minutes of arrival. Our well-appointed room, the Lee room, included a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and we even found ‘extra’ pillows in the closet. While Wayne, our host, provides gratis sodas and water from a refrigerator in the kitchen (as well as real, glass, glasses of various styles), a small refrigerator in the room keeps the traveler’s personal beverages cold. If asked, Wayne also provides an informative overview of Harrisonburg lore and James Madison University facts, as well as perceptive recommendations for dinner in the historic center of town. An easy 15-minute walk from the Inn places guests at Court House Square (maybe 20 minutes back up the short rise) with its historic sites and restaurants. Wayne also presents his memorable breakfast with aplomb. We first learned of it by enticing early morning baking aromas that filled the Inn and, upon arrival at a time of our choice, received a complete, individually prepared, breakfast that literally lasted all day. One can eat on the deck or in a cozy dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Every whim is met with pleasant, affirmative service. When we felt we could eat no more, we received a luscious poppy seed cake. Will power may be needed.

We just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Harrisonburg is historic and delightful; the inn, charming and oh-so clean; the food scrumptious and the staff welcoming, friendly and helpful. We had a fabulous time and hope to return again.

A Great Weekend

We recently had an opportunity to overnight in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at The Stonewall Jackson Inn, a restored 19th century mansion. Our stay was very pleasant and we plan to return when we visit Harrisonburg again. Our room, the Philip Sheridan (all ten rooms are named for Civil War generals), was clean, fresh, bright, quiet and very comfortable – a combination of qualities that’s hard to beat. The inn’s owner, Dr. Wayne Engel, and his staff are very friendly and engaging, adding to the enjoyment of our stay. Wayne’s Sunday morning breakfast was a real treat and truly one that we’ll remember. For Civil War buffs visiting this historical area of the Shenandoah Valley, a stay at the Stonewall Jackson will make you feel like you’re home among family and friends. All others will thoroughly enjoy the experience, as well.

Romantic Getaway

My boyfriend and I live 4 hours away from each other. I looked for a place to stay that was in Harrisonburg because it is about ½ way between us. I looked at the local hotel and Bed and Breakfast. The prices were comparable. I decided to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, what a good choice. Once I reserved a room online (so easy), I was contacted immediately through email by the staff regarding my questions. I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a couple’s massage (something I’ve always wanted to do). Even though it was only a week away, Wayne and his staff went out of their way to make my wish come true. When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and shown around the house, which made us feel like we were truly welcome. I remember my comment as we were settling in our room, “I feel like I am at Grandma’s house.” The rooms were so clean and comfortable. We waited down by the fire, as things were set up for our massages that were given right in our room, and browsed through the information regarding local restaurants, which was provided by Wayne’s staff. Our messages were very relaxing. After a wonderful German meal (our favorite food), we came back to the Inn and relaxed in our room. In the morning we took our time getting up and were greeted in the kitchen by Wayne and Tony, the same two that greeted us the day before when we checked in. Our breakfast started with coffee for him and tea for me. We were given fresh fruit and juice while our breakfast was being prepared. We were served eggs benedict with smoked salmon, bacon and stewed apples. DELICIOUS!!!!! As we were ready to check out, Wayne and Tony asked us about our stay and talked to us like family. What a FABULOUS weekend we had at Wayne’s home – The Stonewall Jackson Inn. I look forward to staying there again.

Staying at the Stonewall Jackson Inn is like being at home and being treated like royalty. Wayne Engel, owner, welcomes each guest and goes out of his way to personalize their B & B experience with warmth, humor, good service, and delicious food. A Pleasant Surprise

I was traveling alone from Philadelphia to South Carolina when I ran into icey roads near Harrisonburg and decided to get off the highway. Fortunately for me, I took the first Harrisonburg exit and started watching for hotels. The first one I came to was filled up but they recommended the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B just down the road. Again - lucky for me. I was greeted at the Inn by the charming owner who made me feel at home right away. When I saw the reasonable rates and the beautifully appointed rooms, I was pretty sure I wanted to stay; however, after he treated me to a cup of hot chocolate while I sat by the fire to thaw out and described the rooms, the ammenities, the breakfast, and offered to go out in the icey conditions to bring in my luggage - well, that sealed the deal. There were several other guests who had taken refuge from the storm - most of them guided to the Inn by their GPS. I joined another person traveling alone to go to dinner at a nearby restaurant (Clementine) - and the food and service were truly outstanding. Back at the Inn for the evening I enjoyed chatting with other travelers, then sat by the fire to finish my book, and eventually sank into the very comfortable bed under luxury sheets - what a treat!. The next morning, I awoke to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon frying. The breakfast was wonderful - juices, delicious coffee, fruit cup, eggs benedict, and mouth watering fried apples - way beyond what I have experienced at other B&B's. I really hated to leave the Stonewall Jackson Inn. I will definitely be back - and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley.

One of Our Favorite B&B's

We've stayed at many of Va.'s B&B's and this was one of our favorites. Just came to the area for snow tubing at nearby Massanutten. We also visited the historic area, which consisted of shops and great restaurants. The Stonewall Jackson was extremely clean(which is a must for me) and the breakfasts were delicious and filling enough to hold us through lunch. We'd highly recommend this to anyone!

Enjoyable Time at the Inn

Our recent stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn located in Harrisonburg, Virginia could not have been better. The Inn was immaculate and our hosts were gracious, helpful, accommodating and in every way eager to please. The breakfast was, indeed, one to remember, but that can be truthfully said of all aspects of our time at the Inn. We highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and plan to stay there on future overnight visits to Harrisonburg.

Absolutely delightful!

Absolutely delightful in every way! My college roommate and I were in Harrisonburg for a college reunion and wanted to stay in a charming location. The Stonewall Jackson Inn exceeded our expectations and Innkeepers Wayne and Debbie could not be more welcoming. Wayne is a fabulous cook and we loved the breakfasts both mornings. The Belle Boyd room was perfect for us with beautiful antique furniture and two marvelously comfortable beds. It was convenient to both James Madison University and the nearby shops and restaurants of downtown Harrisonburg. I would go back in a minute!

Southern Hospitality

My wife and I were on our way to Bethlehem, Pa from Greenville, SC when we decided to stop for the night. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a very easy "off/on" from Interstate 81 at Harrisonburg, Va and is situated close to the charming historic district. As soon as we saw the Inn and met Wayne (the innkeeper) and his associate Galena we knew we had made a good choice. They both are clearly "peope persons" and made us feel right at home. If you are interested in spending one night or several nights you will not go wrong choosing the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg, Va. Jim & Kathy

Do you remember that moment when you walk in the door of your home after being on the road for hours of wearying of travel and your soul lets out that unheard AHHHH . That is the same experience that we had at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Dr Wayne and his staff are exceptional at making you feel like family. Our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn was one of the highlights of our visit to the Shenandoah Valley.

weekend get a way

I hadn't been back to Harrisonburg in over 20 years, so this was a real treat! The innkeeper (Wayne) was extremely helpful in recommending restaurants, one of which we ate at, Clemintine was great! Our room was above our expectitations and the breakfast was incredible. Even though they were full, we never heard any of the other guests.

Weekend Getaway

One of the nicest Inns I have stayed in. It is elegant, without being stuffy. The Innkeeper and staff bend over backwards to make you feel welcome, comfortable and to meet your every need. We stayed in the summer and did some Civil War sites as well as the Skyline Drive - not to be missed! I imagine it would be as beautiful in any season. When they say it is "a breakfast to remember," they are absolutely right. Innkeeper and chef, Wayne Engel, prepares a magnificent breakfast that rivals any 5 star restaurant. We enjoy B&Bs, but frequently look for new ones instead of returning to one we already visited. The Stonewall Jackson B&B is an exception....we will definitely be back! Barbara

Believe the website

The risk of choosing a bed and breakfast from its website lies in the things the site doesn't disclose: the gas station across the street, the noisy refrigeration at the fish market next door; the squeaky floors and rattling pipes. We found NO undisclosed drawbacks at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Its website [www.stonewalljacksoninn.com] provides an accurate and, to our experience, complete description of its facilities and its considerable charm. We recommend the inn highly.

Cozy Stay

This was our first time staying at a Bed and Breakfast. It was like visiting a new friend's home. We spent a quiet evening, relaxing and reading. A late-night trek to the deserted, yet well-lit kitchen found cocoa and other beverages available. Breakfast the next morning was delicious!

Amazing Food and Hospitality!

My Boyfriend and I were traveling from Atlanta to Allentown, Pennsylvania and chose the Stonewall Jackson Inn as a stopping point in the trek home for Thanksgiving. We were running behind schedule and didn't arrive until around 9pm David (great innkeeper and cook!!) was there waiting for us to arrive. He gave us a tour of the inn and suggested some amazing places to eat around town. The Inn is located within walking distance of some great restaurants. While there are some great finer dining places it was the night before Thanksgiving so we chose to do a little pub crawl of the town. JB's and BJ's were two of our favorites. Huge selection of beers, smoked wings, and burgers. We stayed in the Chamberlain room which is located at the front of the house. The bed was wonderful and the room was very clean. Breakfast was amazing. David is a phenomenal cook. We had yogurt and fruit, croissant French toast, bacon, tarragon eggs, and Apple compote. Really really yummy!! Wayne (owner) and David were both superb hosts. We had a nice chat about the history of the inn with them before breakfast and a little tour around the inn. Couldn’t have asked for a more memorable and relaxing place to stay. Thank you Wayne and David!!

Looking for Ancestors

I arrived earlier than expected, and David was very gracious and made me feel at home. The Inn is much larger than I imagined, and to really appreciate it, I recommend you brush up on the Union and Confederate generals for who the rooms are named. After a day of meetings, it was nice to come home to a room that was unlike the standard hotel room and more like staying with a long lost relative. I slept well in the bed and was rested and ready to appreciate the "breakfast" part of a B&B. A homemade breakfast was served in a cheerful and sunny room. The most important feature of a B&B is not the location, the decoration, or even the food. It is the Inn Keepers. David and Wayne are friendly, knowledgeable about the area and its Civil War history, and keep a clean and comfortable inn. I am descended from a long line of Harrisons, and I did indeed feel right at home. Enjoy!

Sweet Spot

We were greeted by the smiling faces and upbeat energy of Erin and Holly. They led us to the sitting room where we checked in and then led us to our room, the Stonewall Jackson Suite, and made sure we knew where everything was and recommended local restaurants for dinner. After we perused the provided binder containing local menus, we decided to drive the short distance to the Clementine. Let me tell you, it was perfect. Local art adorning the walls, alive with happy customers ranging from JMU students to families. The food from apps to dessert was superb! Also, Wayne, the SJB&B owner had given us a business card to show our server for free dessert. We thought it would be one to share, but it ended up being good for all three of us to have free dessert! Then, back to the B&B for a sound night’s sleep. My wife and I were in the comfy king sized bed and our 13 year old daughter was quite satisfied on her futon. When morning came, we smelled the aromas of our breakfast being prepared by Holly and Erin downstairs. Having asked us what time we wished to eat the night before, we sauntered down about 10 minutes early to enjoy some coffee first. Breakfast was really tasty. My only ? was that it was advertised as “A Breakfast to Remember”. Actually, it was a fruit/yogurt cup, French toast made from homemade bread and a sausage patty. I’m a big guy so when Erin said they had more, I happily accepted another piece of French toast. As it would be the only meal we would have at the inn, I guess I expected a bit more than this rather meager plate. Yes, it was tasty and lovingly prepared, but I was hungry within the next couple of hours. Would we go again? Likely to Harrisonburg, but I may pay less for a room at the Hampton Inn and go to Shoney’s down the hill for a big boy breakfast, and still likely save a few bucks in the process. I do wish Wayne and his staff all the best!

A Weekend to Remember!

We arrived after 9PM, very tired after driving many hours (and over the mountain) to be greated by Q who has a smile and winning way about her that made us immediately relaxed and welcomed. As our stay progressed it only got better. The Inn is immaculate and beautiful, as is the surrounding area. There I met my future granddaughter (my financee's daughter's child) who melted my heart. After 5 hours of watching Dora the Explorer Saves the Ice Princess, and other great stories, we went to sleep. The next morning we were greeted by Wayne and Frank to a wonderful breakfast. Day one was his excellent french toast with the trimmings, day 2 we were served the best eggs benedict that I ever had! And my future grandchild had outstanding waffles, which Frank volunteered to cut up and sprinkle with powered sugar. Not only did I receive a Grandpa's (for father's day) card for the first time in my 62 years, without a doubt the best service/food as well. Thank you all, and we look forward to returning very soon!!!

B&J 40 Anniversery

This was our first experience with a B&B and it couldn't have been a better start! Everything was outstanding - the room, the food, and the very friendly and helpful staff. I highly recommend this place to others who are looking for spending some quality time in a quality location.

Southern Hospitality

On my way to a Civil War reenactment in Georgia, how could I not stay at a bed and breakfast with the name Stonewall Jackson Inn. Initially we had a bit of an issue over the rate for a second person in a room with two beds (my 90 year old mother accompanied me to spend some time with my brother in Tennessee) which was resolved to our satisfaction when making the reservation by phone. We were greeted very enthusiastically by Wayne who provided complimentary coupons for dessert at a delightful bistro downtown. We stayed in the Belle Boyd room (named after a Civil War female spy) which was immaculate, and a bit of trouble getting the TV to work to watch the Red Sox vs. Yankees game was immediately rectified. Breakfast was a gastronomical delight on a delightful patio. On my our way back to Vermont we returned for even a better breakfast of Eggs Benedict,

Wonderful Welcome to Virginia

Travelling from Canada to a golf event in Richmond we decided to stay overnight at this welcoming historic downtown home. Jonathan met us in the driveway to help with luggage, get us checked in and oriented and pointed in the right direction for an evening dinning experience. Breakfast on the back porch was superb. Everything about our accommodation and experience was first class. We would definitely return. Room Tip: Large room on main floor with private entrance was excellent.

Lovely Stay at the Stonewall

My wife recently treated me to a surprise birthday "getaway" at the historic Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg Virginia, smack in the middle of the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. Our Innkeeper Wayne and his wonderful staff, Jonathon and Kassandra, made us feel at home in this beautiful home (love the dark woodwork throughout!). Great dinner at a local suggested eatery a short walk away and scrumptious breakfast of Eggs Benedict a la Wayne on the sunny veranda! My wife enjoyed our bedding so much we bought a set of the Inn's sheets!
