Description
Circa 1873. Poised on a bluff on the Upper Mississippi River, this historic, grand Italianate mansion was built in 1873 and restored to offer relaxed and casual accommodations with a French Country décor. Gather by the marble fireplace in the living room or read in the parlor. Enjoy the view from the porch swing on the enclosed second floor veranda or the side deck. The wooded setting is well landscaped. Guest bedrooms and a suite provide well-appointed retreats. Thornton House Bed and Breakfast boasts a "full-size continental breakfast" with generous selections of baked goods, cereals, oatmeal, gourmet jam from Mt. Hosmer Jam Shop and assorted hot and cold beverages in the formal dining room. Centrally located in Lansing, Iowa, it is a five-minute walk to the municipal swimming pool, downtown shops and restaurants.

Large second floor veranda with porch swing and other ample seating offers beautiful private views of the town below and surrounding bluffs. A great place to relax or to read a book. The Cottage is a very romantic setting with 2 porches, one located right off the upstairs bedroom with beautiful, private views of the Mississippi River and wildlife refuge. The Cottage also has a full kitchen where you can create your own romantic meals. |

Thornton House is uniquely positioned on a triangular corner lot meticulously landscaped with mature trees and shrubs. We are on the woodsy edge of a very small town on a mountainside so we also get frequent wildlife passing by. The Cottage is landscaped English country style with lush perennial gardens. |
