Description

Circa 1899. Originally home to Spokane's third mayor, this Queen Anne Victorian has been carefully restored and now features two guest rooms. The Dora Bruce Powell Room boasts an antique queen bed, Jacuzzi tub, and views of the city lights. A wet bar and a seven-foot rain and jetted shower are the highlights of the larger Rigby Suite; an optional sleeping couch creates space for a third guest. Winter flannel sheets make for cozy nights and seating on the side yard provides a cool respite in warmer months. Modern amenities include Wi-Fi, high definition televisions with DVD players, and a kitchenette in the second floor common room. Continental breakfast is provided each morning. Conveniently located in the walker-friendly Browne's Addition neighborhood, the inn is two blocks from the restaurants in Cannon Circle, three blocks from Coeur d'Alene Park, and one mile from the heart of downtown.

Romantic Interest

This is a historically happy home; it was built by the tenth mayor of Spokane in 1899 for the love of his life, Dora, and they raised their children and grands here for over 50 years. Since 2002, Louie and Gillian have worked to restore its eventual six apartments (added-in after the Korean War) to four second floor guest suites and a main floor living area. Two of those (almost three!) are now complete and available. Gillian and Louie occupy the first floor, which is nearly restored. These suites are full of happy spirits, long-loving. They are decorated in calming, serene colors, each self-contained with private baths (Dora has a jacuzzi tub!), and are adorned with candle light (now electric and on timers), seasonal flowers and chocolates for all guests. They have a private guest entry, so that each party can come and go at-will. Sleeping areas do not abut common walls.

What's Green About Your Inn

While the level of conscientious sanitation efforts has increased for every business during Covid, it has made using "green" cleaning efforts a bit more challenging, we use bio-degradable products as much as possible. Please discuss any allergies or sensitivities you have with the Innkeeper when you plan your trip, and every effort will be made to accommodate you, while maintaining a high standard of sanitation. During Covid shut-down, the house converted all hot water systems to on-demand, gas-fired methods. The dryer and cookstove on the main floor are also now gas-fired, as is the newly-renovated central fireplace. A car-charging station is in the five-year renovation plan. All room candles are now battery-powered, and on timers. Roman shades and an "indow" insulator have been added to the west and south-facing main floor windows, additional to their custom storm windows, minimizing power use for heating and cooling.

Innkeepers Association Memberships

The 1899 House has been an accredited Better Business Bureau business since 2014, and has a Super Host rating with Air B:&B.

Describe Garden and Grounds

The 1899 House is located on a large corner lot and faces southwest, with curbside parking on both sides,. The main entry is on the seasonally sun-drenched south face, with its large curtained porch, where guests may enjoy self-supplied wines and beverages, or smoke of an evening. It is bordered with curb trees and rose and mock orange bushes. The West face of the house is where the private guest entry is

Dora Suite

The Dora Suite, located on the Northeast corner of the 2nd floor, and overlooking the east patio's canopy of trees, is serene and quiet. It has a Victorian-Asian feel, and hosts a lovely selection of books to enjoy in one of the wingbacks, if you haven't brought your own. It is done in muted lavenders and grays, and sleeps two in a queen bed, located in an alcove. The suite has a private bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and hand shower for deep relaxation. A large closet, bureau and luggage rack keep your suitcases and personal belongings out of sight. This suite also has a smart tv, and wi-fi is free. Gift certificates for your chosen breakfasts will be waiting for you! Each suite has a combination lock system, so no keys or cards are necessary; your issued combination will also operate the private guest entry door.

Rigsby has a wet bar and wine cooler for your convenience. It has a private bath with a large walk-in shower; its floor is decorated with Cuban tiles. It has a smart tv, and wi-fi is free. Rigsby has a private closet as well, perfect for holding your personal belongings when not in use. Once checked in, your breakfast certificates will be waiting for you. The suite has a combination lock, as does the private guest entry, so no keys or cards are necessary; you can come and go as you wish!

Historic Interest

This is a nationally- and locally-registered historic home, built in 1899 by the tenth Mayor of Spokane. His family owned the home for over fifty years continually, with the last grandchild raised here passing away in the early 2000s. Louie and Lynn have worked continually since 2002 to restore its second floor to four individual suites, and to renovate their first floor living space and exterior to its original glory.
