Description

Circa 1830. The stately columns of this three-story Greek Revival house once greeted Ulysses S. Grant, a frequent visitor during his boyhood when he was sent to buy milk from the Bailey's. A story is told that Grant accidentally overheard that the Bailey boy was leaving West Point. Grant immediately ran through the woods to the home of Congressman Thomas Hamer and petitioned an appointment in Bailey's place which he received, thus launching his military career. The inn has double parlors, pegged oak floors and Federal-style fireplace mantels. Antique washstands, chests and beds are found in the large guest rooms.

A Good Respite

I stayed at the Bailey House one night. It is a beautiful house and the décor in the room I stayed in was very comfortable and classy. The bed was very comfortable and the room was spacious (which was nice because I spent a lot of time in it). The owners are very nice and responsive, they took care of a minor issue right away. Breakfast was great and it was interesting to hear the history of the house and the area. My only note as far as something that would need to be taken into consideration is in regards to how the shared bath works out. I knew it was a shared bath when I made the reservation. The bath is between two rooms so that there was a door from my room to the hallway and also a door from my room to the bathroom. The bathroom also had a door to the other bedroom. The bathroom locks from the inside so that it can't be entered from the bedrooms while in use. The difficulty is that there is no way to lock the bathroom door while you are in the bedroom. Thus you can lock the door to the hallway but there is no way when going to bed to lock the other door. If you are staying with family or friends and you have both rooms this would probably not be a big deal for you but staying on your own with someone you don't know in the other room, that may or may not be an issue for you depending on your personal comfort zone. That being said, I had a really good time and am very glad I got the chance to stay at the Bailey House Bed and Breakfast.

Stay Here!!!

You will love your stay with Nancy at the Bailey House. The house was built in 1832 and is right near President Grant's boyhood home. She gave us a tour of the home and his school. Nancy's breakfasts were delicious and the bed was so comfy!! We loved the décor of the old home and the little dog named "Bailey"!!! Sitting on the porch in the evening was very relaxing.
