Romantic Interest

Far away from the bustling crowds, this is the perfect place to wander down the view-way, sit on the cliff-side bench secluded from above and below and look out at the water, watching the seals play in the cove. Snuggle into the leather sofa in the Great Room and watch the sun set over the water. Enjoy nature at its finest and then escape to your lovely room with an afternoon snack.

Describe Garden and Grounds

The estate is a peaceful retreat, set among rolling fields, meandering stone walls and richly colored perennial gardens. The Cape looks out on an English cottage garden in front, with a profusion of tall, colorful blooming plants and on a shade garden in back, with protected Ladyslippers and myriads of lilies-of-the-valley. The farmhouse has an herb garden and is surrounded with perennial gardens, coordinated by color. All buildings are surrounded by apple trees of all varieties. Blueberries grow in the meadows and raspberries and blackberries grow at will, as well as in the vegetable garden. There are hiking trails which take one through the woods, to the freshwater pond and down the viewway to the river.

Wonderful and relaxing stay

After some showers the first day, the sun broke through and the place was glorious. We kayaked--our harbor seals surrounding the boats, ate lobster, read, walked the Porter's Preserve, the magnificent Botanical Garden. A perfect weekend! Thanks, Melissa, for a great weekend!

What a beautiful spot for a wedding

My fiancee (now husband!) and I, along with our families, rented both the farmhouse and cape house on this property for a week in early September. At the end of the week, we had a small wedding in the back yard, overlooking the beautiful Back River. We simply could not have asked for a better setting for our wedding!! The property is absolutely lovely, and the view of the Back River from the farmhouse is breathtaking. The houses are bold, colorful, and beautiful, as is the proprietor, Melissa! With 9 bedrooms between the two houses (5 in the farmhouse and 4 in the cape), each with a private bathroom, this place would be perfect for any large group! Finally, the location of this property is perfect- close enough to Boothbay Harbor to easily pop into town for shopping or dinner, but far enough out of town to get away from the hubbub and enjoy some peace and quiet! Melissa is warm and welcoming, and makes you feel like family from the moment you arrive. What a beautiful place for a vacation, and a wonderful way to start our married life! Thanks Melissa!

Harbor Lights Family Reunion

Melissa is the perfect hostess and Bold Colorful Life is the best location for our annual family Christmas.. We are a family of seven adult children and 15 grandchildren.. most from away.. so this was our second year of being lucky enough to meet here for our family holiday, The dining table is the perfect place for holiday crafts, cookie making and the kitchen is perfect for our appetizer and dessert contest chefs. The great room with the largest christmas tree we have ever seen, was perfect for relaxing, games or an evening of Karaoke..Yikes. The bedrooms are so comfortable and the kids love the fact they all have their own bathrooms! See you in 2013 Melissa!

Two great visits

Hi Melissa, We wanted to write and tell you that we enjoyed our second stay at your Bold Colorful Life estate immensely. We hope to return again and again. Last time, we loved the Farmhouse…the spacious, comfortable rooms, the wonderful 200 year old barn timbers in the Great room and the amazing view of the river. Everything was even better than the website pictures promised. Our daughter wanted to repaint our whole house in brighter colors after seeing what you did with your Inn! We enjoyed doing our crafts and having meals around that huge table….more than enough room for our 11 person group. The breezes off the river and all the paddle fans cooled the summer sun and the eagles and blue heron were a delight. The kitchen was so well equipped…there wasn’t a recipe we couldn’t create...and we made quite a feast. Thanks for giving us the tour and for answering our questions and needs along the way…it was good to have you nearby when we wanted you. This time, it was the historic Cape, for our smaller group. Again, the colorful and whimsical rooms were SO comfortable and we got caught up on sleep…so important for our vacation. Our daughter brought a friend this time and they loved the cozy bunks and their own private bath. We love your wildflowers and the emerald green lawns between them, and we love all the stone benches and hammocks, in perfect spots for resting. We didn’t see the eagles, but loved the bullfrogs and the last of the tree frogs around the pond. Thanks again for giving us the perfect spot to gather with family members, catch up with each other and with rest, enjoy the beauty of waterfront Maine and of the Boothbay peninsula. We recommend the gardens, lighthouse tours, nearby hikes and downtown waterfront restaurants to your other guests. See you next year! Annie T

Fantastic!

This was our first time renting a house for our family summer getaway and it met all our expectations. It was charming, warm, and cozy. Every bedroom was pleasant and colorful and each had an adjoining bathroom which was wonderful. The kitchen was great for the many meals we put together. We loved the deck. The grounds were lovely to walk around and Melissa is such a great hostess. Thanks Melissa for making our Maine vacation so memorable!

October at a Maine Inn

The serenity and beauty of this farmhouse retreat was matched only by the stunning views of the river. Rooms and common areas were immaculate, amenities were top notch and the innkeeper gave us a warm welcome and was great at recommending restaurants, hikes and places to visit in the area. The porch and gathering room were wonderful places to relax, and the big farmhouse table was the scene of many lively conversations. Perfect retreat for a family or friends reunion!

Colorful Columbus Day Weekend

I came here with college friends for a weekend mini-reunion. (The owner Melissa Thornton went to the same college.) The property has an enchanting view of a tidal river and picturesque landscaping and paths. I stayed with my friends in the renovated Cape – the rooms there were charming and cozy and my bed was very comfortable, but other than sleeping, we didn't spend much time there. In fact, we didn't spend all that much time on the property. Melissa, who puts the E in enthusiasm, organized a host of things to do, including visits to the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Coastal Maine Botanic Gardens, Camden, Boothbay Harbor, a local outdoor crafts fair, local restaurants, and more. Our college group shared a fantastic breakfast with French toast and omelets and fruit – the dining room table is actually an old barn door shellacked to an impressive gleam, one of many unusual touches that make the place colorful. The library, with a large wall of a window facing the river, is sky-high with books. If you'd like to stay at an "away-from-it-all" place that isn't far from a boatload of activities (kayaking included), Bold Colorful LIfe is a great choice.

A bucolic escape

The Bold Colorful Life Inn was the perfect getaway spot for a reunion with friends. The Inn and surrounding property served both as a peaceful escape from the throngs enjoying the New England Fall colours, and a jumping off spot for a variety of sightseeing adventures including galleries, shopping, hiking, delicious seafood and more. Melissa is an enthusiastic host who knows the area well, and made great recommendations for activities. The accommodations at The Cape are charming, cosy, clean and self-contained. The bed was firm and comfortable, each bedroom has its own bathroom, and the kitchen is fully equipped. I only wish I could have stayed longer.

Love, love, love this Inn.

This is my fourth visit to Melissa Thornton's Bold Colorful Life Inn and I look forward to returning. So beautifully appointed inside and out, the Inn allows me a carefree weekend in a striking natural setting. Melissa could not be more welcoming and accommodating and no detail is forgotten. The farmhouse kitchen has everything needed and the great room has a library and view to the Back River that simply does not stop being interesting. Nearby Boothbay Harbor has good restaurants and cute shops right on the water and the Botanical Garden gives a different view every year. I highly recommend staying here.
