Historic Interest | In 1830 this house originated as a mercantile shop, operating during the last 6 years of President James Madison's life. The house was once owned by one of President James Madison's grand-nephews, John Madison Chapman. During one of the Civil War skirmishes that were fought in the town's streets, according to local legend, a Confederate soldier died on the porch steps of the Holladay House.
