An adventure vacation with lots to do if you like the outdoors.Used historically as hunting grounds by plains Indian tribes such as the Sioux and Arapahoe, the area has also figured prominently in the lives of innumerable trappers, miners, ranchers, loggers and other rugged pioneers. Modern settlers made their first marks on the Red Feather Lakes area in 1871, when John Hardin built his cabin on South Lone Pine Creek and began ranching and logging operations.Today, recreation is king, enjoyed all-seasons by thousands of outdoor enthusiasts, with hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding, seasonal white water, fishing in stocked lakes for sweet Cutthroat trout or on the Cache La Poudre River, a Wild and Scenic fly fishing river (Rainbow trout and Brown trout). The village is now home of a number of bed & breakfasts, dude ranches and camp grounds. Hidden in a nearby canyon is the Great Stupa of Dharmakia, a Tibetan monument and retreat center. The village, population about 550, is built around a series of scenic mountain lakes, and offers visitors services such as several general stores with gas stations, gift shops, restaurants, library, post office and fire department.
