Description

Circa 1896. Acclaimed as one of the finest early examples of architect Claude Bragdon's work, this restored Georgian mansion is one of the iLoveInns.com Top 10 romantic Inns for 2009. Its history only enhances the rich warmth, and the immense size reflects a cozy ambiance. Relax in a leather chair in the traditional library. Antiques and collectibles combine well with florals and chintz for a touch of romance. Two guest bedrooms and the Garden Suite boast fireplaces. Four-poster rice beds and hand-painted furniture add to the individual decorating styles. A gourmet candlelight breakfast is served in the formal dining room on crystal and china or on the brick garden patio. Enjoy afternoon tea on the wicker-filled front porch. Walk one block down tree-lined streets to the urban village of Park Avenue. A plethora of historic sites, including The George Eastman House and Strong Museum, are within a one-mile range.

Historic Interest

Circa 1896 home on the National Register of Historic Places. The home was owned and built by one of George Eastman's (of Eastman Kodak) friends and personal lawyer, Edward Harris. Mr. Harris built the house as a wedding gift for his daughter Emily Harris Sloan. They shared the same Architect, Claude Bragdon as well - though it is said that Mr. Bragdon fell out of favor with Eastman - and later moved on to the New York City area. It was there that Claude Bragdon is said to have gotten involved with the theatre industry and invented the colored 'gels' still used in theatrical lighting today.

Serenity

I travel a great deal with my business to Rochester. In my search for something different I found the Edward Harris House. It is one of my favorite places. I have stayed in 3 different rooms but cannot say which was my favorite. All are perfectly decorated without being cluttered. Comfy beds are just over the top wonderful. Innkeepers are wonderful, amazing breakfasts, even catered to my work schedule. It is located between East Ave and Park Ave which is loaded with great dining, museums and shopping. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner...

What an experience!

We stayed there last year for our anniversary, and it was such an extraordinary weekend. The inn was beautiful and romantic, and in a neighborhood that had the charm of a small town, but the museums and attractions of a city (we loved the George Eastman House). We woke up to delicious breakfasts and feel asleep to our in-bedroom fireplace. I want to go back for this anniversary! oh, and the owner's dogs are adorable!

My favorite romantic escape

This is one of the most gorgeous, lovely places I've ever stayed at. The atmosphere is so lush and beautiful. And talk about romantic.... my fiance proposed here. Susan helped set the stage and it was the most beautiful evening of my life.

Romantic Rochester Retreat

I stayed here for a night by myself on business, and genuinely wished my better half was with me. A beautiful house with large, beautiful rooms with fireplaces, in one of the most gorgeous neighborhoods I've ever seen with large old houses makes for relaxing evenings and sunny afternoon walks. Fidel, one of the two house mascots, is one of the cutest dogs I've ever seen.

Perfectly romantic

This inn is architecturally gorgeous, beautifully maintained, and offers an absolutely perfect balance of friendliness and privacy. You will be well taken care of and treated with generosity and care. The inn is located in a wonderful, easy-access Rochester neighborhood, in an absolutely quiet, serene setting. A perfect place to bring someone special.

A Truly Romantic Experience

The romance of a bygone era lends to a truly romantic retreat from the stresses of reality. That Susan and Manny are exceptional hosts is icing on the cake. Each stay with them has been more than we could hope for.

A Hidden Romantic Gem!!!!

The Edward Harris House Inn is the most romantic bed and breakfast inn. My husband and I have been staying at the inn since it opened 9 years ago. In fact, my husband proposed marriage to me in the Garden Suite. Susan arranged for a most romantic setting in the room with flowers, music etc. The breakfasts are superb and the innkeepers are sensitive and responsive to the individual needs of their guests whether it be vegetarian, lowfat, food allergies etc. The inn itself is beautiful, welcoming and the graciousness and friendliness of Manny and Susan Alvarez makes your stay a romantic home away from home retreat. We have traveled extensively all over the world and the Edward Harris House Inn is our favorite by far.

A romantic home away from home

I have stayed here once or twice a year over the past 3-4 years and have stayed at other b&b's around the country but we always end up comparing them to The Edward Harris House - which is the best! I grew up in this town but instead of staying at my childhood home, I stay here to make it a romantic getaway. Rooms - beautifully decorated and beds very comfortable. Grounds - love the porch and it's swinging chairs and the back garden area Breakfast - amazing Location - walkable to cute cafes and shops. Most fun area to stay in Rochester. Hosts - friendly and accommodating You won't go wrong if you pick this b&b on your next stay.

A Perfect Choice

My Husband and I choose the EHH for a Romantic getaway on our 10th anniversary. It was the perfect choice! The inn-keepers made us feel more than at home. The property is breathtaking with very elegant decore' Our suite was just beautiful and very clean. The EHH's location is ideal for a casual stroll along both Park Ave and East Ave with great historic sightseeing. We highly recommend this B & B and look forward to visiting again!

No better in Rochester!

Simply put, it's the ONLY place I stay when I travel to Rochester (and I go often, to visit family). You won't find an inn more beautiful, rooms more roomy, or hosts more pleasant and accommodating -- Susan and Manny are the best!

Very Romatic

We had a wonderful time while visiting Rochester for a concert. It was a wonderful romantic get away for us. We do not get away much by ourselves without our 3 children so this was a very special weekend for the both of us.

The Best Romantic Getaway!

A visit to the Edward Harris House is a romantic and relaxing experience that can't be beat! The house is absolutely gorgeous, with each room unique and beautifully appointed; the food is out of this world; the innkeepers are terrific; and the setting and attention to detail is wonderful. It all adds up to a most romantic time. I strongly recommend a visit!

The Best of the Best!

My husband and I have stayed in dozens of B&B's throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and New York, but there's never a question where we'd like to go when we have the opportunity to choose our destination. It's Rochester, New York simply because of the Edward Harris House and the warm ambiance created so beautifully by Susan and Manny Alvarez. We always feel like most welcomed guests in their HOME. They're available to spend time with us, yet they value our privacy as well, and afford us the opportunity for alone time when we need it. Susan was born to host a B&B and I'm so glad we stumbled upon it! Now that gas prices have fallen, we'll be making our way to Rochester sometime soon and can't wait to settle in to our "home away from home."

Home away from home

We were officially the first B&B guests of The Edward Harris House. We travel often to the area, and have stayed at the EHH everytime we are in town. The Inn is beautiful, completely redone and redecorated with guests comfort always in mind. The food is incredible, and the owners are personable and engaging. We have recommended it many times.
