Description

Circa 1753. L'Auberge Provencale was built with fieldstones gathered from the area. Hessian soldiers crafted the woodwork of the main house, Mt. Airy. As the name suggests, a French influence is prominent throughout the inn. Victorian and European antiques fill the elegant guest rooms, several of which include fireplaces. Innkeeper Alain Borel hails from a long line of master chefs, his expertise creates many happy culinary memories. Many of the French-influenced items served at the inn's four-diamond restaurant include ingredients from the gardens. Accommodations are also available three miles away at Villa La Campagnette, an 1890 restored home. The home includes two suites and the Grand Master bedroon on 18 acres with a swimming pool and stables.

great!

Our anniversary celebration with you was a culinary treat! The kitchen delighted me both evenings with exquisite dishes while minding my need for a low-to-no sodium diet. So kudos to the entire dining staff for making me feel special and not out of the ordinary! The Villa is quite lovely…the sunny disposition of Room 14 made us feel as if we were a million miles from home. And being greeted with fresh lemonade, fruit, and pastries was truly a treat…not to mention the lovely linens and amazing shower!...

A wonderful time

Hello! We had a wonderful time at the inn. The food was delicious, and the service was great. We have no suggestions for improvement, although we do miss the Sunday brunch service that you offered a few years ago. Thanks for hosting us. We had a splendid time!

Romantic Get Away

We love to take romantic get aways at L'Auberge Provencale. The food wine service and rooms are first rate. We have spent many New Years Eves at the Inn. And the best thing is it is only a few miles from home!

Chelsea

L"Auberge Provencale would be PERFECT for Chelsea and her husband to visit. The service is 5 Star. Alain & Celeste are FABULOUS innkeepers, they know what you need and when you need it, you do not have to ask. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the grounds are exquisite, every kind of fruit tree you could want is growing. They make all of their jellies and jams. Then there is the garden, all of the vegetables are fresh from the ground. The wine cellar is next to none, voted one of the best in the world! Breakfast, Brunch and Dinner are a gourmand's delight. Staying here is a day in paradise. Jim Wolters, Atlantic City, NJ

Anniversary

Just returned from L'Auberge Provencale celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary. Stay in Suite #2 which was gorgeous. It was decorated partially with antiques for a cozy feel but updated to give it a modern look. The tile steam shower was amazing. Service was impeccable. They even accomodated our food requests for all of the meals, including a picnic basket packed for us to have lunch on the top of a hill at a nearby winery overlooking acres of a beautiful landscape. Toured nearby Harpers Ferry as well. Watched the sunset as we sat on the bench at the back of the property. Very relaxing 2 nights. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic Inn!!

The rooms are great! The food (both multi-course breakfast and dinner) is unsurpassed and the wine list is superb. We've been visiting for over 10 years now and each time it just gets better. The grounds at both locations are delightful. Lot's to see and do at nearby locations especially if you are into the Virginia wine country as we are.

I had the Pleasure of staying at L'Auberge for my New Year holiday with my wife. The service was impeccable and our room was FABULOUS! The staff could not have been more helpful. No detail was left undone. The food, one word "superb". Celeste & Alain Borel have created a world of its own. I will be going back again and again. 10 STARS

20 Plus Years of Romance

My husband and I have visited L'Auberge at least once a year for over 20 years. Although the inn has changed and grown (as have we) throughout the years, the romantic nature of the inn, the attention to detail by the owners and staff and the elegance of the food continues to delight and surprise us year after year. We look forward to another 20 years!

A Romantic way to celebrate!

L'Auberge has been our first choice to stay when celebrating our Anniversary. From the coziness of a warm fireplace to the welcoming tray of sweets and bubbly in our room, we have always enjoyed the romantic ambience of this special place. We are looking forward to spending our 42nd anniversary next month at this wonderful B&B. Because of the special attention all of the staff give to their guests we enjoy coming at other times of the year as well! The beautiful grounds, the outstanding meals and the decor throughout all the rooms make this a wonderful place for very special occasions or just to feel special!

A Most Romantic New Year

This year, as in years past, we spent the night with our wonderful friends in White Post. The New Year's dinner was superb, exactly the right balance. Our wine was spectacular. (The Inn has a fabulous wine list!) Then we retired to our specious room and savored the end of 2009. We started 2010 with a wonderful breakfast and good conversation. As an "all-natural" farmer, I know what goes in to the making of such fabulous meals. Thank you again for a wonderful stay. We will be back.

Tres Romantique

My husband and have stayed at this "tres romantique auberge" 2 times thus far and plan on going back in April for my birthday. We usually go when we are celebrating a milestone--birthday, anniversary, etc. It is very private, charming, and the food is absolutely delicious. The "repas" was our favorite--it was delivered to our room and we ate it in front of the fireplace. Our room was separate from the main inn and thus provided complete privacy. We rate it as one of the most romantic places we have stayed in with the French cuisine being one of the finest we have ever had. We are definitely going back. The only very small criticism that we had was the heating in the winter months--warm enough but the start of the heater is a bit loud. May not bother most people as I am a very light sleeper.

Romance

I must tell you of a place my husband and I have been visiting, enjoying and savoring since the early 80's. L'Auberge Provencale is located in an idyllic corner of northwest Virginia. Imagine a setting of glorious Shennandoah Mountains, apple orchards, vineyards and grande ole Southern hospitality, and you have a hint of what to expect. Celeste and Alain Borel have mastered the art of combining ultimate luxury and comfort at the inn with exquisite cuisine in the diningroom. My husband surprised me at L'Auberge with a recreation of our wedding. He rented the entire inn, and long-time friends as well as many of the original wedding party came from all over the country. Every detail was meticulously attended to create the most romantic anniversary. I respectfully ask that you strongly consider L'Auberge as one of your "Most Romantic Inns" for 2010...and I strongly recommend that you visit...your fires will surely be kindled!

Consistency

I have had the extreme pleasure of staying at L'Auberge several times since they first opened over 25 years ago. It is located in White Post, VA not far from the lovely sight of the Shennadoah River and in full view of the Blue Ridge mpuntains. Consistency is the best compliment. I have been there for every season of the year. I attended a formal wedding reception,a formal birthday party, and eaten in the French Gourmet dining rooms which have received numerous awards. This year I spent New Years Eve there to celebrate 2010 and over the years have enjoyed several romantic interludes at both the main inn called L'Auberge Provencale and the alternate site called La Villa Campagnette which is just a few miles from the main inn. When I use the term formal, I mean elegance. When outside occasions are the order of the day, wood floors were placed on a great expanse of manicured lawn, with a large white tent sheltering the guest from a light sprinkle or a much too warm stream of sunshine. Linen, crystal, silver and a wait staff catering to meet your every desire create not only a romantic atmosphere, but provide an air of a mellow sense of refinement. The icing has always been a great band! Both sites offer distinct differences in setting, but not in service and cuisine. The main inn sits on about 7 acres with several guest rooms, an amazing bridal suite and rooms that are almost little cottages, designed after the those found in Southern France. These rooms are furnished eclectically. The beautiful bedding and curtains are primarily made from material/designs that have been in the use in France for centuries. Bright blues, yellows, reds and oranges are tastefully brought together to offer guests an experience they will not find easily and maybe anywhere else. The other site also sits on 7 or 8 acres but gives me the feeling of really being in the country. Acres of farmland can be seen out any window. Cows and horses graze nearby and in the distance I once saw an entire herd of deer. It was beautiful. This site also offers a full size rectangular pool, large outdoor hot tub and beautiful gardens surrounding the house and pool. It is beathe taking. This is a brief !description. You ask, "Is it romantic?" My goodness, unbelievable! For most of us, it is our responsibility to brew the romance. At the inn,Celeste and Alain, owners, bend over backward to welcome you and provide everything to create a romantic setting. Do you want a bouquet of flowers to show up in your room. Celeste will order them for you. Champagne, wine, food, fruit, and chocolate are all avilable on site. Several rooms have private sitting areas. All have tiled baths and showers with tiles imported from Europe. Would you like to walk in a beautiful park, play golf, go up in an air balloon, rent a plane or pick up a pair of stockings because you just go a run? Celeste and Alain will make arrangements, give you directions and offer you a congenial manner with smiles, laughter and a warmth rare in this industry. I feel like I have a sense of knowing about B & B's as I watched a sleepy little town in Southern NJ about to fold and slowly turn into a Bed and Breakfast hot bed, no pun intended. I am referring to Cape May, NJ. One more thing I feel compelled to mention, is the food and wine. Their menu is constantly changing and new and delightful entrees with professional presentations are always available. Alain, innkeeper, is always up early preparing a great breakfast for the inn guests. The inn dining areas are all carefully decorated and designed and the room shaped like an octagon with french doors surrounding the perimeter are so unique and lovely. The wine list runs the gamut. I am not a wine expert, but I have seen the wine cellar. You can spend from $15 to over $1000 for a bottle of wine. The wait staff is knowledgeable in assisting persons such as myself and Celeste, innkeeper, is an amazing resource. Needless to say, they have my vote!!!!

my wife and i have been celebrating our thanks for each other, for health and friends and thanks for L'Auberge by spending a romantic Thanksgiving at this wonderful Inn for the past six autumns, usually in the exceptionally comfortable room #9...excellent food, great service; we'll be back there again for Thanksgiving 2010....and maybe sooner;

Best romantic escape!

We have stayed at l'Auberge on multiple occasions. It is the perfect romantic countryside escape. The rooms are spacious and tasteful and the setting is beautiful. We love doing the 2 day stay where dinner the first night is a gourmet picnic repast brought to your room, a porch, or poolside. A great way to wind down the first evening. The 2nd evening we have dinner at the inn. The food is wonderful and it is nice to sit outside on a warm summer night and have a relaxed, romantic dinner. The breakfasts are amazing! Definitely our favorite romantic escape!

Romantic French Rendezvous

L'Auberge Provencale is our favorite romantic getaway this side of the Atlantic. We've stayed a number of times, each time in a different suite or room, in winter, spring, and summer. Each time we've enjoyed spectacular views of orchards, gardens, and meadows; well-appointed luxurious accommodations, and the best meals and wines to be had outside of New York and Washington D.C. On our most recent visit, in late summer, a sudden late-afternoon thunderstorm created additional romance and drama as we opened our cottage door and windows to enjoy the lusty fragrance of the herb garden caressed by rain and wind. A pure delight. Everyone should experience L'Auberge.

InnSide Tip - Ideal location for day tripping
L'Auberge is ideally located for day trips shopping or hiking in 'horse country.' Check out the nearby (and lovely!) french antique store run by L'Auberge Chef's father; great for one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Gentility, taste, and passion run in the family!

My boyfriend brought me to L'Auberge Provencale as a surprise around Valentine's Day last year, and we stayed in Room 11. What a romantic time we had! Our room had fluffy white robes, a fireplace, a beautiful king-sized bed and a wonderful large jacuzzi tub. Ordering the repast for your room is a MUST if you: a) like to eat, and b) are staying for more than one day. The repast was TWO trays covered with meats (cured in-house) that were too good to believe, delicious cheeses, fruits, bread and sauces that went far beyond our expectations. We snacked from the repast during the day and dined at the restaurant at night. The prix-fixe dinner was inventive and delicious, presenting a wide variety of dishes. Though the meal was several courses, it was the perfect amount of food. The service was excellent: attentive, personal and friendly. L'Auberge Provencale is lovely inside and out. We've stayed here again since our first visit, and it was just as delightful as we remembered. The place is so magical, I didn't really want to venture off the grounds! I would recommend the Inn to anyone, and they offer many packages and deals to help make your stay more affordable.

Romantic and Elegant

My wife and I return regularly on our wedding anniversaries to this beautiful inn located in the Virginia countryside, not far from Washington, D.C. The rooms, with four poster canopied beds are furnished charmingly and very cozy. Fresh fruit and flowers add to the ambience. The dinners and breakfasts are outstanding, rivalling the best restaurants in the nation.

Outstanding Romantic B & B

L'Auberge Provencale is a treasure: food, atmosphere, rooms, grounds, mountain views, and especially the warmth of the owners, all are consistently sublime. We've been regular overnight guests for about 20 years, as well as coming just for dinner. We look forward to returning. WF and CF, McLean, VA

South of France Romance

L'Auberge Provencale is like a taste of Southern France at your fingertips no matter what the season. From the coziness of the main inn to the ammenities of the swimming pool at the 2nd building to the oustanding cuisines and wine list - this Inn just outside of Washington, D.C. - oozes elegance.

Romantic and Delicious

Our annual trip to L'Auberge Provencale is always a treat. The rooms are sumptuous and the food is first rate (inventive, as well as delicious to the eye and the palate), prepared with vegetables from the garden in season and always focused on local ingredients. (The food is primarily why we keep returning.) On one occasion we traveled with friends, one of whom had a food allergy. The proprieters made her a special meal with which she was extremely happy (joyfulness in food is hard to achieve when one has such limits, but the inn made sure that this was no barrier). In addition, we have dined at the Inn at Little Washington and while it is an experience that is hard to equal elsewhere, L'Auberge Provencale comes close (but with a much more affordable "tab").

Memorable Visit

My husband and I visit inns on a yearly basis. My husband researches the inn and we usually spend three nights. This tradtion now 13 years old has afforded us the opportunity to stay in many different places. We have developed a "memorable list" of inns that we must return to, and L'Auberge is there. The rooms, food, location, ambience are the best. There is a quiet sense of attention to detail which allows one to feel comfortable and cared for. The setting is very romantic allowing you to spend quiet time with your mate.

Our Favorite Romantic Inn

We have been coming to L'Auberge Provencale for many, many years - often visiting several times in the same year. Our favorite room has a sitting area with a fireplace - very romantic. The food here is superb as is the ambiance and the staff. We have planned our visits for special occasions as well as wonderful getaways when we feel like being pampered. We have often recommended L'Auberge Provencale to friends who are looking for a lovely, romantic inn which excells in all respects.

Romantic Treasure

Tonya, Stafford, VA We absolutely love this inn. With a half dozen visit here in the last two years I can definitely say its such a wonderful place to spend with the person you love the most. What keeps us returning are the wonderful staff and the food is to die for. The beautiful setting is perfect and I can't say enough good things about it and this has become our go to getaway when we need to reconnect. We have stayed in three different rooms on our visits and they are all well maintained, romantic and cozy like your in another world. We love this place and will continue to make it "Our Special Place".

Our Romantic Getaway

Every couple needs a romantic getaway from time to time, and over the years our choice has been L'Auberge Provencale. As I have told many people, it is the charming country inn you hope to find in the south of France. The hilltop setting between flower and vegetable gardens and the bountiful orchard is gorgeous. The rooms are large and beautifully decorated in the cheerful sunniness of Provence. I particularly like the new, beautifully tiled steam baths added to the suites. And dining is a joy, as French-born chef and owner Alain Borel creates a daily menu that is so innovating and tempting you can't make up your mind what to choose. In summer, we enjoy a glass of wine on the porch overlooking green pastures stretching into the distance. In winter, we snuggle up before a warming fire. We could explore the vineyards and historic sites nearby, but most often we simply stay put to enjoy the inn. Do you wonder why it is the place we go to celebrate major birthdays and, of course, our anniversaries? James T. Yenckel, Washington, D.C. Last visited on Thanksgiving Day 2009.

A Delight

L'Auberge Provencale is an absolute delight. The staff is very attentive. The decor and furnishing of the rooms is unique. The little seating area in the room we like best has a gas fireplace that makes it a very special place on a cold winter afternoon after a aromatherapy steam shower. The food is superb. The wine list is excellent. What's not to like?

Perfect Romantic HideAway

Conveniently accessible from DC, L'Auberge Provencale is the perfect way to sneek in a little R&R. Romantic Doesn't Begin to Describe

Romantic doesn't begin to describe this beautiful inn. We stayed there the night before our wedding and on our wedding night. Even had the reception there. Months have passed and people still tell me and my wife what a great time they had at L'Auberge.....and how impressed they were with the meal, service, ambiance, and overall beauty of the inn and grounds. The next morning, we were served the perfect breakfast for a newlywed couple. We're going back every year for our anniversary!!

Romantic French Country Inn

We've been frequenting L'Auberge Provencale for about 10 years and have never been disappointed. The rooms and suites are comfortable and beautifully decorated. The fruit basket provided with each room is a wonderful touch. The restaurant is spectacular - magnificently prepared dishes that use fresh, local products in both classical provencale recipes and interesting innovations.

Romantic Then and (Even) Now

The proprietors’ unusual sensitivity to the needs of their guests is what brings me back to L’Auberge Provencale -- this and very happy memories of candlelight dinners in the most romantic of settings. On occasions such as wedding anniversaries L'Auberge hospitality is appreciated, if somewhat taken for granted at so fine an inn. But sometimes a visit can be of a different kind, as when I found myself of necessity in the Shenandoah Valley, alone on the first anniversary of the death of my beloved husband. Although no one at L’Auberge knew the reason, I must have seemed unbearably sad. The proprietors and the dining room staff handled me with amazing perceptiveness, gracefully sequestering me away from the festive dinner crowd at a table in a corner, one that was so perfect for remembering and longing that I was able to think with complete happiness of the very romantic times I had spent there. I have stayed at wonderful inns all over the world, but none of them could have matched the exquisite service and warmth I experienced that evening, and for which I will always be grateful.

We have been at L'Auberge for birthdays, annversaries and other special events in our lives over the past 24 years. We have seen many changes - all improvements over perfection. Romantic French Ambience

My husband and I have stayed at L'Auberge many times, and have always been impressed with the romantic decor, the privacy, the equisite food, and the training of the staff. We stay in a different room every time to enjoy the various amenities: steam shower, fireplace, soaking tub, sitting room, private garden, and many other treats. The chef is talented and creative, and the wine list is extensive. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate guests' wants and needs. We feel fortunate to live nearby, so that we can often take a weekend away. Our most recent stay was during the December snowstorm, when we had 18 inches of snow; the staff kept the path to our room cleared, and we had a delightful breakfast as usual in the morning.

InnSide Tip - Historic Winchester, VA
The historic town of Winchester is just about 10 miles up the road from L'Auberge. There you'll find George Washington's surveying office, the estate of Glen Burnie, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, a museum of Civil War history at the Old Courthouse, and a charming downtown pedestrian mall with great restaurants and shopping. If you're a history buff, Winchester is worth a stop.

Exceptional French Country Inn

My husband and I have been staying and dining at L'Auberge Provencale for many, many years and it just keeps getting better each year! The decor is exceptional in both the restaurant and sleeping rooms with vivid french country decor and furnishings. Everything is top quality including the bedding, draperies and furniture and the bathrooms have the most beautiful tiles I have seen this side of France. The restaurant is one of the best in the Washington, DC area serving the freshest of ingredients, traditional and creative french cooking and a terrific wine list. The staff are very friendly and make you feel comfortable throughout your stay. In fact, over the years, we have gotten to know many of them and are on a first-basis. This is a terrific place for a special occasion for those who savor the finest in B&B's and food and wine.

25 visits

We discovered L'Auberge Provencale 20 years ago and have been looking forward to visiting it each new time as a special treat. We have stayed at Inns in almost all 50 states, and this is still our favorite. The food is sublime--the breakfast is fabulous, and once you have ordered the creme brule to top off dinner, you will never order creme brule at any other place. We love our room with the fireplace, but we won't tell you which one we always choose, because we want it to be available for us when we need to be pampered. This is a very special place that makes its guests feel especially welcome.

A very romantic retreat

My husband and I had our wedding ceremony and reception at L'Auberge Provencale this past August, and I am so glad I decided to go with this beautiful French country inn. The service was wonderful, and the rooms were so beautiful and well-kept, not to mention the delicious and beautifully presented food! A Birthday to Remember!

Celeste and Alain Borel and all of the other staff at L'Auberge Provencale are amazing! We stayed for 2 nights at the Villa and there was not an unpleasant second the entire weekend. The food was amazing and the atmosphere so relaxing. This is the perfect getaway location especially if you are celebrating a special event. I took my husband away this particular weekend to celebrate his 46th birthday. He’s not an emotional guy by any means, but he was truly touched by the personal, above and beyond attention he received by all of the staff at L’Auberge Provencale. From a personalized dinner menu to the birthday package with baloons in the room upon arrival and a wonderful birthday cake in our room after dinnner on a plate with the words “Happy Birthday” beautifully scripted in chocolate… everything about everything was incredible. We will most definitely be staying at the L’Auberge Provencale again!

Romantic, beautiful, relaxing!

My husband and I just returned from L'Auberge Provencale after spending the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. From the minute we arrived it was amazing. The setting is beautiful, from the front porch where we sat to escape the June heat under the ceiling fans to the manicured grounds. We enjoyed walking around the grounds admiring the vegetable garden, the herb gardens and the fruit trees. There are lounge chairs under the trees where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Our room was beautifully decorated as is every inch of the inn, right down to the smallest details. We enjoyed two breakfasts in the dining room (unbelievable warm scones, fresh fruit and homemade granola followed by a breakfast entree chosen by the chef) and one dinner where I ate beef that melted in my mouth, and do not skip dessert, the creamiest cheesecake on earth. Lemonade and baked goods, nuts, and dried fruit were offered in the sitting room each afternoon. The staff was very attentive, Rutledge was great! We had no knowledge of the area and he mapped out a wine tasting route for us and gave us some very good tips for things to do in the area. We also loved Vicky who was very friendly at breakfast each morning. I don't think we will ever stay at another B&B and not compare it to the luxury we experienced here. I would highly recommend a stay here, its perfect for a romantic getaway, especially if you enjoy wineries and antiquing (in Strasburg).

Fantastic, romantic birthday stay

We celebrated a special birthday of my husband's and had a fantastic two-night stay at the "villa" and a wonderful dinner at L'Auberge. They made a vegan menu just for us, and it was unbelievably good! If you have dietary preferences or restrictions, they will accommodate you, and with the best gourmet food you can imagine. We ordered the gourmet picnic basket for the Saturday of our stay, and it was so much food we could not finish it-- all delicious. The staff is very friendly, also.

Our Anniversary

We had a wonderful stay on our 27th Anniversary. We enjoyed the accommodations the friendly attention from the staff and the beautiful countryside. The evening meal was exquisite. The breakfast prepared for us on the day that we left was delicious and much more than we expected. In fact we did not eat again until an evening meal at our next destination. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and have “raved” about our experience to our friends. We have forwarded information about your B&B to a number of our friends already. We hope to visit again soon. -Stu & Debbie

A surprise.

We want to thank you for a wonderful stay in Suite 14 this past weekend. Our sojourn to your facility was intended to be a surprise to my wife but I too was amazed by the attentiveness to our comfort and the quality of service. The amenities and service were excellent. The dinner on Saturday evening was truly one of the best meals I can remember - and breakfast the following morning was fabulous! --- The only regret is that we couldn't arrange to have one or more nights added. Certainly L'Auberge Provencale is one of Virginia's gems of tourism. We are now enthusiasts of L'Auberge Provencale and look forward to another special occasion to stay there. ~Kirk

Return to L'Auberge Provencale

After twenty years (raising a family) we returned to the inn and found it just as wonderful as we remembered it. Thank you for an enjoyable, relaxing weekend. Jerry and Marian
