Cherry Date Sparkle Bars

This sinfully rich filling of dates, cherries and pecans tops a pie-like crust for an irresistible bar.

Crumb Mixture
1 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1-1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup coconut
1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans
1/2 cup halved maraschino cherries, drained

In a 1-1/2 quart mixer bowl combine all crumb mixture ingredients. Beat for 1 to 2 minutes till mixture is combined well and crumbly. Press into an ungreased 9" square baking pan. Bake @ 350 for 15-20 minutes until edges are lightly browned.
Meanwhile in the same mixing bowl combine all filling ingredients EXCEPT dates, coconut, pecans and cherries. Beat at medium speed until well mixed, 1-2 minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour mixture over hot crust. Return to oven; continue baking for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned and filling is set. Cool completely and cut into bars.
