2013A Perfect Day in Taos, New Mexico
By Chris Smith, General Manager
of the Historic Taos Inn
The perfect day in Taos would be filled with history, culture, art, beauty, entertainment, adventure and fine dining. Come with me and let me show you the treasures of Taos.
Begin your day in Taos, New Mexico
Of course I might start my day with a delicious breakfast at Doc Martin’s Restaurant. The ambiance is warm, the service is casual and it’s a Taos Tradition. I prefer the blueberry blue corn pancakes with Vermont maple syrup.
Then it is time for adventure! If it is spring or early summer, the Rio Grande Gorge has much to offer for the white-water enthusiast, amateur naturalist, rock climber or fly fisherman. A paddle through the gorge is an experience not to be missed. I personally enjoy kayaking after work or climbing down into the canyon on one of the many breathtaking trails.
In the late summer and into fall, the single track mountain biking in and around Taos is some of the best in the West! By Thanksgiving, I am back to the mountains for snowboarding and skiing.
After an outing, I would advise a lunch at one of Taos’ great restaurants. Try to sit at an outdoor patio and watch the local color of Taos pass by while spending time with family and friends.
Next, you’re off to the world heritage sit at Taos Pueblo. This is the oldest multi-storied adobe structure in the United States! The Taos Pueblo Indian Tribe still currently inhabits the Taos Pueblo and a visit offers you a glimpse into a real working Native American village. I recommend bringing some extra spending money to purchase authentic Native American foods from local vendors and shopping for specialty items like traditional pottery, jewelry and art.
By late afternoon, head back towards town and stroll through the historic district in and around Taos Plaza. Shopping and art galleries abound in this area. A walk down Ledoux Street is worthwhile, with a recommendation to stop at the Blumenschein House and the Harwood Museum.
After a full day of activity my appetite would lead me back to Doc Martin’s for dinner, which features an award-winning wine list, delectable over the top seasonal new American cuisine, in a casual yet elegant atmosphere.
Finally retire to the Adobe Bar for an evening of music. The Adobe features live performance seven nights a week, with SRO jazz, flamenco, country and world music performances. If it’s winter, I’ll sit in front of the fireplace and reflect on “the Most Perfect Day,” which is almost every day in Taos.
