Many couples who are avid bed and breakfast fans claim B&B getaways help keep the romance alive, but perhaps also the couple who reads together can make the same claim. I know couples like that. Reading a book, especially a novel, can open up deeper lines of communication – there’s a lot of chemistry when you both love the same book. So what could be better than combining a road trip with a great read?

All the audible books below have been book-club tested, are entertaining and have excellent narration. Some are so spell binding that you might stay seated in the car after you’ve reached your destination, and all have high marks from sites such as Audible and Amazon. Of the books included some are related to areas you might be visiting, such as Charleston or Seattle or Jackson, Miss.

No worries if you are driving three hours and the book is seven hours of listening, most audible readers will note your place.

With the exception of A House in the Sky, and Wild, most of these can be listened to by children eight and up and will provide plenty of conversation topics.  Topcs include moving from L.A. to Seattle, eco-architecture, local sourcing and the surprising southern bells who  moved to the North and lectured against slavery. Others immerse you in living in Charleston or Jackson, Miss., England, Botswana or Arizona. All will hold your attention and stay with you years later. Some day, you may even say, “Remember when we read Where’d You Go Bernadette or The Help during our vacation to The Smokies, the Jersey Shore, the Adirondacks, California, Michigan?? You’ll remember your stay very much in deed, if you travel inn to inn, but you’ll also remember your book.
