Southern Inn Gardens

Noth’n Could Be Finer Than to Be In Carolina or Anywhere in a Garden in the South

Spring is the most joyful time to travel in the South, especially if you design your trip around inn gardens. You’ll enjoy 50 shades of green and pink and purple and forget all about winter. We’ve collected some of our favorites below.

Monmouth Plantation – Natchez, Mississippi

Monmouth plantation

Monmouth Plantation Gardens  were created by Bill Garbo, noted Mississippi horticulturist and specialist in the design of gardens in the antebellum period. Harvey Cotten was also instrumental in working the design,  the chief horticulturist at the Huntsville Botanical Garden (and friend of my Aunt Dottie Dale of Huntsville, who has a section of the Alabama botanical garden to her).  When my Aunt and I stayed at Monmouth she was the celebrated guest because she knew Harvey. Now is the time to enjoy the inn’s 26 acres of wisteria vines, azalea-lined paths and Japanese garden.

Bed & Breakfast on Tiffany Hill – Near Asheville, N.C.

Tiffany Hill

Birdhouse & Secret Garden

Selena  Einwechter,  innkeeper at Bed & Breakfast on Tiffany Hill, has created these gardens to enfold her purpose-built property and with them has been featured in Southern Living Magazine. Her design includes a series of bird houses and pockets of serenity and whimsy are found throughout the inn’s six  acres.

Whitegate Inn, Asheville, N.C.

Asheville Bed & Breakfast

This beautiful pond is part of Whitegate Inn and  Cottages, a Four-Diamond inn. The inn offers a green house with 1,500 different orchids, and hosts many unusual plants including 18 varieties of  Japanese maples.  The gardens have been featured in Better Homes & Gardens and have won a number of prizes.

Two Meeting Street Inn – Charleston, S.C.

This has always been one of my favorite inns with its exquisite veranda in the historic Battery and South of Broad.

President’s Quarters – Savannah, Georgia

Historic gardens are everywhere in Savannah and many have been restored. Many inns in town also are close to or even directly on the town’s  beautiful squares accented with fountains and flowers.
